چکیده

The research was focused on the slurry-phase biodegradation of naphthalene in soil. Among ex-situ techniques, the slurry-phase technique offers the advantage to increase the availability of contaminants to bacteria. From soil samples collected on a contaminated site, the Pseudomonas putida M8 strain capable to degrade naphthalene was selected. Experiments were performed in a stirred and oxygenated reactor. In this study the influence of air flow rate on volatilisation and biodegradation of naphthalene was investigated. The hydrocarbon disappearance, the carbon dioxide production, and the ratio of total heterotrophic and naphthalene-degrading bacteria were monitored. The results obtained confirm that the selected bioremediation technology is successful in treating contaminated soils.

Biodegradation Modeling of Nitrophenolic Pollutant in a Slurry Bubble Reactor

Biodegradation kinetics of 4-nitrophenol (PNP) in aqueous solution by a gram negative soil bacterium, Ralstoniaeutropha was firstly studied in a small scale batch reactor. The degradation of PNP was evaluated at initial PNP concentrations ranging from 3 mg/L to 14 mg/L. The rate of PNP consumption by the bacterium culture was modeled using Monod and Contois kinetics in batch condition. PNP degr...

Effects of humic substances and soya lecithin on the aerobic bioremediation of a soil historically contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

The high hydrophobicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) strongly reduces their bioavailability in aged contaminated soils, thus limiting their bioremediation. The biodegradation of PAHs in soils can be enhanced by employing surface-active agents. However, chemical surfactants are often recalcitrant and exert toxic effects in the amended soils. The effects of two biogenic materials as...

Semicontinuous microcosm study of aerobic cometabolism of trichloroethylene using toluene.

A semicontinuous slurry-microcosm method was applied to mimic trichloroethylene (TCE) cometabolic biodegradation field results at the Que-Jen in-situ pilot study. The microcosm study confirmed the process of aerobic cometabolism of TCE using toluene as the primary substrate. Based on the nucleotide sequence of 16S rRNA genes, the toluene-oxidizing bacteria in microcosms were identified, i.e. Ra...

Biodegradation of Bicyclic and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Anaerobic Enrichments

Although many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known to be biodegraded under aerobic conditions, most contaminated sediments are anaerobic. With recent results demonstrating that some bicyclics and PAHs can be degraded without oxygen, information on specific biodegradation rates and electron acceptor stoichiometry is lacking. A fluidized bed reactor (FBR) enrichment approach was used...
